Michigan's Newest

Rail-Trail

About the Trail

Seven-plus miles through three communities.

Completed in 2023 and an outstanding Michigan Rail-Trail, The Michigan Air Line Trail has been in development, design and construction since 2009. Click here for a list of milestones.

It didn't just happen overnight.

From abandoned railway corridor to a world-class trail, click the video for a few highlights in our trail journey.

How was it done?

Using the Trail Safely

The Air Line uses a number of safety devices at road crossings. Understanding how these crossing devices work is important to being a courteous and safe trail user, as well as being a mindful motorist when not on the trail.

Events and Activities

We recently cut the ribbon to celebrate the new downtown extension of the Air Line through Downtown Wixom. Come check it out!

Finding Your Way

You can get there

from here.

The Air Line is a key segment of a growing trail network in Southeast Michigan, connecting trails, towns, neighborhoods and even Great Lakes.
From the Air Line, all kinds of cafes, restaurants, breweries and shops are just steps away. Whether it's an ice cream cone, a pizza or a craft beer, come visit our communities; they are eager to welcome you.

The Air Line is at the heart of western Oakland County's trail network. Click the map to explore some of our sister trails in the area.

Regional Trails

There are many ways to support the Air Line. Volunteer at an event, attend a Friends of the Michigan air Line Trail meeting, sponsor a bench purchase, or (coming soon) donate to our Forward Fund, designed to make sure the Trail will be around for generations to come.
